Welcome to one of the most unique and intriguing properties in Louisville. This large, rambling log house suggests an early settler recreating his Palladian home in tidewater Virginia with the only materials available on the Kentucky frontier: log and stone. Even the gutters are wooden. In reality, the house began in 1920 as a getaway for R. Baylor Hickman on the property of his historic house, Berry Hill. His wife was Stannye (Eustatia) Ormsby Hickman. As it was nearing completion, his son Baylor O. Hickman married Louise Jones and they asked to use the cabin temporarily. They moved in, raised three daughters and greatly increased the size of the house. The original section was built by nineteen craftsmen and two mules with the assistance of Joe Bittner. The workers and the elder Mr. Hickman are seen in a pair of photos given to the current owner by his granddaughter, Lollie Hilliard, who grew up in the house. The floors in the original section are reportedly from a naval battleship. The oak boards are an inch thick and some measure twenty inches wide. The massive doors with hand-forged strap hinges from the Bauer Forge have wood latches operated by wooden springs. For security from Indians or more modern marauders, one can still pull in the latch string and bar the front door. The original part of the house also included the dining room and a kitchen which now serves as a breakfast room. The younger Hickmans added three bedrooms and three bathrooms to the rear of the house. An impromptu mural in the west bedroom/family room was painted by Eugene "Bud" Leake, a landscape painter and president of the Maryland Institute College of Art. His wife was Nora Iasigi Bullitt of Oxmoor Farm, Louisville. They were visiting the younger Hickmans and "Bud" improvised a mural depicting jockeys in the daughters' own racing silks astride family horses, with their father in the background. Little has changed since the Hickmans left. An intervening owner painted the living room white, but Susan and Garvin Brown returned the logs to their natural state before selling the house to the current owner in 1972. This owner added a new kitchen and devoted years of energy to preserving and enjoying this beguiling getaway. 5901 Cabin Way has the original entry posts for Berry Hill, which the Hickmans purchased in 1909. It originally comprised 3500 acres and was reportedly surveyed by George Rogers Clark in the 1790s. Berry Hill was built by James Smalley Bate circa 1800. The farm contained a mill, a factory, a distillery and a graveyard, which is still maintained by the Bate heirs. Its acreage stretched from Old Brownsboro Road (Highway 22) to the river. The new owner of Cabin Way can still enjoy 1.6 remarkable acres of lush grass, massive trees, a tall hemlock hedge and a brick patio off the dog trot, surrounded by boxwood.
