Killington was chartered on July 7th 1761 from a New Hampshire land grant. In 1800, the residents of Killington changed the name to Sherburne after a popular landholder: Colonel Benjamin Sherburne. The town voted to return back to its original name of Killington at the March 2nd town meeting in 1999. This was approved by the Vermont General Assembly and the town became Killington once again on July 1, 1999.

The town is home to the largest ski area east of the Mississippi River with Killington and Pico Mountains. Preston Smith began the Sherburne Corporation and started construction of the ski area in 1957 on lease land from the state and opened on December 13, 1958. Killington was a pioneer in snowmaking and grooming, eventually becoming the ski area with the longest season in the country.

The town is also home to the Killington Mountain School, a private ski academy dedicated to the education and training of many of today's US Ski Team members. The town operates the Killington Elementary School which consistently is ranked as one of the top elementary schools in Vermont.

While the town today is built around the ski industry, there is also a vibrant outdoor lifestyle in town. There are two public golf courses in town along with public tennis, baseball fields, soccer fields and the local town pool.

The town is the cross-roads for the Long Trail (runs north & south) and the Appalachian Trail (running south then east) providing hikers with a myriad of day hikes or more. Hiking and mountain biking abound at the ski areas and in the neighboring towns. Like to fish or kayak? There are two small lakes in town that are stocked by the state, as well as larger lakes just south on Route 100.
