"While attending this high school a security guard attempted touched my pocket inappropriately. Then for days I felt like he was going to do it again. When I finally went to the principal, I was called a liar and put on 10 days suspension. Upon returning from my suspension I was handed an expulsion hearing notice. They had signs all over the school that stated if you see something, say something. Which is what I shouldn't have done. If so I wouldn't be going through these issues that I am now."

"HSC is a diverse school that's reputation has only been dragged through the mud on a mistake made almost 4 years ago. This school is as good as you make it and is the best place to be to figure out who and what you want to be. Also the mastery-based learning is such an independent way to learn and helps you understand how to understand your mind."

"Extra help opportunity is plentiful, as are out of school opportunities. Good community."

"Most teachers are very interested in student success. Student voices are valued and heard, especially under the new building leader regarding hiring staff and changes in schedule / grading system. However, the grading system currently implemented is difficult to implement and comprehend. Many take more than four years to graduate."

"I had previously attended a bigger high school where I did not feel as comfortable and the teachers hardly remembered my name or in which of their classes they had me as a student. However, when I got enrolled at High School in the Community sophomore year, I felt welcomed. Surrounded by friendly students and staff, I was able to find friends and get involved in school activities right away. Thanks to HSC, I have been able to take over the opportunities that are offered in the New Haven Public Schools that students at bigger high schools do not necessarily always hear about because our teachers care that we take over the opportunities that are offered to us. I was able to participate and take leadership roles in things such as politics, the Salsa Club and climbing a mountain all the way in New Hampshire. HSC is the place to go when you want to make your voice be heard and enjoy being a leader around your school and your community. Although our school is small, we still have a variety of clubs offered by the school where students are able to show their interests and discover new things; some of these clubs created by our students and we are also able to join sport teams from the bigger high schools. What makes my school unique is the comfortable environment we are exposed to; where we can make our school our own and are able to change the things you may not necessarily like about it since our ideas and opinions and respected, accepted, and heard. Yes, I would go to HSC and do it all over again."
