"The quality of the academics at Columbia High School completely depends on your teachers. Although there are many course options, it's hard to fit everything into your schedule because there are many required courses, so if you want to take certain courses you often have to make room in your schedule by cutting out lunch or having a first period, which starts at around 7:00 in the morning."

"One thing that is great about CHS is that there is a lot of diversity, and a lot of kids. It is easy to find friends because there are so many different people that you are almost guaranteed to find someone who is similar to you."

"Some people love Columbia. I am not one of those people. Every child is expected to be an ideal student, meaning no mental or learning difficulties, immediate understanding of complex concepts, and no need for extra help. For those who don't meet those standards, Columbia can be a very unwelcoming environment. As a student who struggled with health issues throughout high school, I found that teachers and administrators were unaccommodating. Many teachers are lazy and do the bare minimum, and most administrators are incompetent-- about 3/4 of the guidance department is made up of people who act like they hate their job, and could care less about the well being of students. There is also a fair amount of favoritism among teachers, and many of the gym teachers are creepy or favor certain girls a little too much. On the other hand, there are some teachers who are very invested in their students and are good teachers, and I know of two guidance counselors who are absolutely wonderful. The arts and media programs are great, and have very friendly teachers. Overall, a student's experience at Columbia High School is almost entirely dependent on luck. If you get mostly good teachers, are consistently healthy, and have gotten high grades in the past, you will likely be fine."

"As public schools go, the school isn't really that bad. It has excellent media and arts programs. However, the pressure to excel on the state assessment testing precludes teacher creativity in teaching methods; teaching critical thinking and preparing these students for adult life are not encouraged. Students of color are not accorded the same expectations of greatness by the counselors and deans; college prep counseling is abysmal."

"At the beginning of sophomore year, I got very sick and was often too weak to go to school or do assignments. I struggled tremendously and my grades fell into the 60s and 70s. I had doctors' notes, parent teacher meetings, but I was still treated by most of the CHS administration as if I had committed a crime for being sick. Teachers looked at me with disapproval, were reluctant to help me with missed work and class-time, and when I came after school for help, they often scolded me for not understanding topics that I hadn't been in class to learn. I even had one teacher accuse me of lying about my illness. There was a certain attitude among teachers that sickness was a sign of weakness and unworthiness-- that sickness just meant that the student wasn't working hard enough. Needless to say, this made dealing with poor health even more difficult, and was overall an awful experience."
