"My school was not seen as "diverse" by the majority of people. I believe that, when reviewing my school, it is necessary to review the history of the town it is in. Henderson, NC is an old mill town, and still suffers from old conflict between white economic classes and racial conflicts that were prevalent because of this industry and the times it grew in (whether people realize this history or not). Though this is no excuse, it is to be expected that change does not happen immediately, and the need for change is not always obvious to those who are from older generations. However, I believe my school made great strides towards diversity of appearance, nationality, and thought during my 14 years of attendance (pre school through senior year.) Many students from other socioeconomic backgrounds were given greater scholarship opportunities. More students of different races attended (there were never any restrictions of course, it was a matter of my school being a sort of family tradition that continued on from times where there were these restrictions). Families in several grade levels began hosting international students, one of whom was in my class and graduated as class president. Aside from any lacking diversity my school has today, the diversity of religious opinions, political stances, personal style, and educational choices is strong. My school and it's faculty always fostered great opportunities for all types of people, caring only for our attitudes and goals."

"The 40 people in my class all graduated, the majority with honors. 90% played sports, 100% participated in clubs and sporting events. We all went on to either the military, a four year university, or a community college. Our junior year required a career exploration internship which definitely helped most of us gauge new ideas for our desired fields, or at least gave us a taste of what we wanted when we left high school. I feel as though, although my high school was small and in a very rural area, we have all been greatly prepared for our futures. We don't know everything, but we were taught how to learn and how to desire to learn. Not book learning alone, but practical, everyday knowledge required to exist as helpful citizens. Now that I am a student at UNC Chapel Hill, I can see the fruit of my wonderful high school, that has given me an appreciation for my hometown and a yearning for the rest of the world around me. We were taught to be intelligent and eager, but humble. These are priceless qualities when entering the "real world.""

"I have been going since I was in pre-k and it has changed my life. It is my home away from home. The teachers and students are close and anyone will lend a helping hand. If I did it all over again I definitely would go back to my school."

"Every teacher is obsessed with their subject, knows their students well, and can pay plenty of attention to their areas of expertise. It is so helpful to have a teacher know who you are and be able to remember your situation. They are always very available and helpful, and it is not uncommon to be able to call a teacher or have a teacher call/text you about some school activity or class issue/activity. It's a very healthy relationship that is awesome when you go to apply to college."
