"A wide variety of classes are available in the course catalogue at my high school, and the scheduling process is straightforward and easy to follow along with. In January, students are called down to the auditorium to meet with their counselors to discuss and schedule their classes for the following year, and they bring the slip of paper that has the courses they want written on it. The following fall, you get your schedule and once you get a few weeks into the marking period, you'll notice that the teachers, no matter if they teach a core class or an elective, are passionate about what they teach and want you to be, as well. For the most part, the staff doesn't assign too much work outside of school unless students take IB classes, then they have a few hours of homework a night. Popular classes include Latin, Power Training, Art classes, and Ancient World History, and the teachers for those subjects are all confident and excited that students want to learn in those classes."

"The summer of becoming a freshman at Portage Northern High School, my family and I moved from Missouri. I knew nobody, and was very worried about how classmates would treat me and how well I'd do academically. After the first full day of school, I already met my first friends in the new state, who came up to me on their own to ask about me. The entire school is like this; if someone is sitting alone or isn't talking much in class, other students will talk to them and include them with friendly attitudes. Even the teachers care deeply about their students, because if someone seems like their struggling with their work or has difficulties answering questions, the teacher will either email them or talk after class to try and help them out so they don't fall behind, even without the student asking. There are many clubs for students to join, so there's something for everybody. There's athletic clubs and teams, yoga clubs, language clubs, and volunteer clubs. Most students participate in at least one extracurricular activity per week, so there's always something new to indulge in after school. I absolutely love attending my high school; nobody is left out of any activities, everyone carries themselves with pride for their school, and there are many fun ways to learn more."

"The teachers at Portage Northern High School care very much about the academic and overall well-being of all students. Most of the time, they're easy to ask for help, whether it's in class or before or after school. Should a student have a question that delves further into the topic we're learning about, the teacher will most likely be able to answer or ask you other questions so you can answer them and learn more. Many teachers in my school are upbeat and confident, engaging the students by making them laugh and learn at the same time, and they don't shoot down anyone's ideas. They make sure each student doesn't have any questions about the material we learned about or are learning before we move on the more difficult topic or take a test. Overall, the teachers at Portage Northern High School are easy to work with and keep students engaged and genuinely love to teach."

"The social scene at Portage Northern is a very positive thing. In the three years I've attended, I've never once seen someone being bullied in the halls or outside the school. I see people being accepted and cherished despite the fact that they might not be exactly the same as everyone else, and differences are not a negative thing in the eyes of the student body. Our school is full of diversity, and nobody is afraid to go to school because they are a little different. There are many foreign exchange students, a wide variety of races and ethnicities, sexual orientations, religions, and learning disordered, and none of the said things are looked down upon. I have seen students notice exchange students who don't understand English very well and take them under their wing to help them along and try to learn about the other's culture. There's a blind freshman boy at my school, and there's always someone new helping him to his classes so nobody accidentally runs into him or vice versa, and a lesbian couple was voted the "cutest couple" last year in the whole school. Overall, the students attending Portage Northern aren't insensitive and are eager to learn about their fellow classmates."

"A lot of the teachers are very approachable and friendly, but some seem not to engage students of to challenge the students. I'm not sure whether it is cause of the subject or teaching style but are definitely gaps. Some are pretty much impossible to reach out of school too, which makes it harder for students who miss or don't understand certain concepts. It is cool though how teachers give students their home numbers to contact them and stay after school for additional help. A majority of the classes had a tutor system though that let students get help from teachers or other students outside of school. The last thing was that my teachers had Google websites that allowed students to see daily work or sources that would help different topics."
