"The students are treated like criminals who need to be managed. No bathroom breaks, no adequate time to go to lockers between classes so students are forced to carry all their books and things all day long, lunch lines are long and slow and if you aren't the first in line you don't have enough time to eat. General policies it seemed are designed to make every day as painful as possible."

"I have heard almost nothing about parent involvement at our school, except for parents helping out in the theater department. My parents went to a CPEO thing, to learn about college, but that's it. I think most parents had a similar experience. When talking to my friends, many of their parents are too busy to come to their activities or even conferences, and I think that is pretty typical. Our parents expect a lot from us, but they don't offer a lot of support."

"I've enjoyed my experience at South. There's no other school in the state that has as diverse of a student body and people from all different types of backgrounds. It's taught me skills that I'll be able to use for the rest of my life that your typical suburban school doesn't offer."

"I feel with the teachers it is usually a hit or miss. Many of the higher level English teachers I have heard are absolutely wonderful! They truly care about the material and their students. They really go out of their way to make the classroom an inviting and welcoming space for learning. However, there are many other teachers in the school, especially many of the new ones, who are obviously just there to do their jobs and go home. I never felt excited or included in a math class, and it was very clear with one of my chemistry teacher she didn't care about our quality of education one bit."

"The teachers know how to engage their students and get them motivated to learn about a variety of topics! For example, I had an English teacher my junior year, and I was a terrible writer and didn't enjoy English as a class because of it; but my English teacher helped me organize my writing and get me excited to learn how to write."
