"The classes are restrictive. It is hard to get all the classes one might want/need during a school year. Many students are unable to get a class such as World History or Health, so they must take it in the summer, and even then it is hard to take due to the overwhelming number of people who also want to take it in the summer. The honors and AP classes are extremely difficult and can be overwhelming to be even the best of students. There are only two online courses available--AP Psychology and AP European History-- and neither are very good courses, though very many people take advantage of psychology. Some teachers are very devoted to their jobs, but some just lounge around because they know the students will study and learn the material whether they teach or not."

"Most of the teachers want their students to learn the material, but they all realize that the students are heavily tutored, so some teachers will not put in their greatest effort to make sure they are teaching well. There are a few teachers who make themselves readily available and provide many resources such as before-school and after-school hours, review sessions, and extra practice materials. There are also those teachers that will make the class unreasonably difficult with extreme amounts of homework, unbelievably tricky and lengthy tests, and a merciless grading system."

"The school is simply too difficult to allow for success. The class are limited, there are many restrictions to getting classes, and the challenging classes are beyond challenging, allowing the top few people to receive A's. If one is to try to work hard in high level AP or honors classes, he must give up extracurricular activities or sports, and vice versa. There is no balance--study hard or enjoy your life but fail in your classes, one or the other."

"Students are generally very accepting of students with different ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, or disabilities. There is a moderate level of peer pressure, but it is generally not seen too much. There are students who try to raise awareness for queer rights."

"San Marino High School is a great school, but it does have its downfalls. The amount of pressure to succeed and preform well at this school is huge. It can be overwhelming at times and can become detrimental to a certain extent; pushing for success is great but cracking under all the pressure is not uncommon. Also, the parents here tend to get over-involved at times. This happens in sports, extra circulars, and academics. If the parents do not like coaching decisions or certain grading scales they will voice their opinion until something changes (which can be good, but also very bad.) Additionally, the overall student body lacks compassion. San Marino is a very privileged school and community and we are not exposed to people on the other end of the spectrum which results in an air of ignorance among the students. Despite this, San Marino is a fantastic school and I am glad I received my high school education there. The teachers are phenomenal, the resources are unparalleled, and the drive to achieve greatness overall promotes healthy competition and results in successful students."
