"The teaching styles they try to teach seem to them like they are effective but i have noticed that its no different then any other way."

"The teachers know each student. They are able to address an individual's needs for academic support. They do not let students coast by under the radar. The teachers make a point to draw the individual into discussions. There is a lot of interaction between students and teachers. The classrooms are very active, not lecture based. The teacher will alert parents to concerns early on. Teachers are very accessible and communicate effectively with parents and students often."

"My son went here for all 4 years as a parent i thought it would be a great choice as a parent because of how they welcomed you and accepted you. During my sons first year he complained of there being not enough academic help and all the attention was on the sports. This consisted throughout all 4 years here and he never stopped saying that the academics were awful and that it was only meant for sports. Till this day I regret ignoring him about what he was saying. It turned out that when he tried applying for colleges all the colleges were looking for from students from O'Dea were athletics. So my son could have gone to a far better college if he was to attend a more academic based highschool. This is by far one of my worst mistakes I have made."

"O'Dea relies on traditional teaching methods: book work, writing, classroom discussion. It is confirmed that students learn best when information is written, as in note taking. Alot of emphasis is on good old fashioned writing. They do not rely on technology for class research and notes. Students have shown poor retention of taught material if using devices/screens only. O'Dea assures that students are prepared for a four year college. O'Dea does have a strong athletic component however its emphasis is academics. I understand dozens of colleges visit the O'Dea campus recruiting because they know O'Dea produces a well-rounded student who is strong academically and involved in the community. Colleges are not just looking for students who can test well. They want a student who will contribute positively to the college as a whole. It is a fact that O'Dea produces more students who receive academic scholarships to colleges, rather than athletic scholarships - about 1 per graduating class."

"Students are told that the Gurian Teaching Method is an effective style of teaching, yet I can think of only 3 teachers that practice it. As the Gurian Institute claims, lectures are not effective for boy minds. Unfortunately, this school does not moderate its own use of the method. Nearly every teacher believes strongly in lectures, little use of brain exercises, and quiet book reading. I feel as if my family was bought in on the "boy effective teaching methods" and were conned out of it. Putting that aside, Many of the teachers base their lectures on opinionated stances, such as political views, and I don't see much of both sides being supported. I have many reservations about teaching methods, but no one can argue dedication. A lot of effort is being put forth by the teachers that I only wish could be appreciated by the students. If only the methods were sound."
