"Honestly, If I had to choose between being home schooled and going to this Carl Sandburg Junior High, I would definitely sacrifice my education and social life to stay home. In 7th grade I was known as "the new black girl", and faced racist and ignorant comments on a daily basis. Unfortunately, I was forced to deal with it alone since the administrators didn't do anything to stop the bullying. The white kids did not want anything to do with me (thinking that I was going to be "a typical crazy black girl) and the black kids thought I was too "white" to hang out with them. I finally found my niche by hanging out with the Hispanics. Even though they where the main ones making the ignorant racial comments, I just had to laugh them off in order to secure my spot at the lunch table. The principle saw my affiliation with the Hispanic kids and started picking on me for every sign of "gang representation" that I showed. I got in trouble for wearing black and yellow, for wearing star earrings, and for even drawing a crown on top of a picture I drew of a princess! It was absolutely appalling how everyone else but the minorities where able to wear and do whatever they wanted without getting in trouble, regardless of the written rules and regulations. The principle knew that I had recently moved from a different suburb and had no clue about the gang issues happening in the neighborhood, yet he still chose to suspend me over such petty things. Clothing items that others wore all the time but did not get looked twice at for. It was awful. This school has never played by the rules, even to this day the girls that I coach tell me horror stories about how the minorities are treated by faculty. It's such a shame. I will never forget what the principle said when I pointed out a white girl wearing a black and yellow shirt with stars on it and asked why she's not going to get in trouble for gang related colors. He just laughed. "It's just not the same.""
