"I'm a parent trying to decide whether to send my child to school here this fall as a kindergartener. Can a parent or administrator address why they believe this school has a 7 rating when every other elementary school in Sherman Oaks has an 8? Thank you."

"To the 4-4 poster: I learned my lesson about pointing out this stuff to Riverside parents when a mom on her way to a PTA meeting (my guess) last September nearly ran me off the road as she crossed a double yellow line because I wasn't going fast enough for her in MY OWN neighborhood. When I pulled over in front of the school to point out there are kids playing on these streets, she flipped me the bird and shouted some expletive as she disappeared in to the school. Lesson learned. Don't think approaching any of these parents about stuff like this will be productive. The only opportunity I missed was the opportunity to have some defensive parent shout me down - or worse. I'm in education and I see it all the time - parents don't like it when strangers criticize. Sounds a little like the children they're supposed to be parenting, doesn't it? The second star is for your love of dogs."

"I have a 3rd Grader in this school and we couldn't be happier. My child loves his teacher, the principal is incredibly hands-on and the school seems more united than even when my child first started. Recently the school went Charter and it seems like there is more parents and teachers working together to do great things for the kids. Now we as parents have a chance to participate in curriculum planning and technology advancements. Just got an announcement that the school received a California Distinguished Award. The Principal of this school has really turned this school around - she is fantastic. Although she has her rules that she sticks by - sometimes parents can get uppity about them. But you can't make everyone happy all of the time. You do the best you can. And I get the feeling her priority is our kids!"

"For the 3-29-12 entry re: taunting the dog... Yes that is horrible! I am a dog owner and I would have been enraged as well - so much so that I would have said something to stop the behavior thereby pointing it out to the inattentive parents - you missed your opportunity. Now on to reviewing the school. This is a school that has become better every year under Principal Kessler. It has become a Charter school and much is being done to add and improve many programs for the school and the kids are benefitting from it. Test scores have increased steadily every year. As a result, Riverside was just named a CA Distinguished school. Wel are very happy with Riverside and our child is getting a good education."

"We just left Riverside's open house, as our 5 year-old is entering kinder in the fall. We have lived around the corner for many years and have always known the school has its share of parents who are inconsiderate during drop off in the morning. However, as we were leaving, we were horrified to see a group of 5 parents chattering in a circle across the street as their 4 kids (my guess,4th graders) ruthlessly teased a neighbor's dog to rile him up and pulled another neighbor's Banana trees from the ground and used them to beat each other - AND THE PARENTS DID NOTHING! Just kept blabbering away. Their kids weren't 10 feet away while this was going on and they couldn't be bothered to parent them, even just a little bit. No wonder that dog barks his head off whenever we walk by- those kids get their jollies being cruel to him - WITH THEIR PARENT'S CONSENT! On the walk home, our preschooler couldn't stop asking "Why were those parents letting their kids be mean?" Great question! Riverside parents, you need to step up your game - if not for the community, then for the sake of your own children! The 2 stars is for the group of parents with us who were similarly aghast."
