"*Caution: There is an effort to remove truthful, negative posts. I am reposting to highlight that I quote a review not listed! This is SO typical of CNS: deny, deny, deny. Original post begins here: The below review that says "It is in no way an acceptable option. Staff and parents who voice concerns are treated terribly" could not be more true. This also is true: "In 2013, a large number of families left, registering their disappointment as they did so." Although the school has an elected board, and presumably there is an opportunity to affect change, it doesn't really work out that way. The system is fundamentally flawed, and it's hard to have tough conversations. For example, 50 percent of the teachers are on the board. Would you feel comfortable speaking the truth when your fellow board member might be responsible for your child's experience? How must the director feel with so many teachers on the board? What I can promise is that at some point the board will discover these posts and will organize an outflowing of positive responses. Once again, the people who left these reviews will be made to look "disgruntled." Save yourself money and frustration. Look for another option."

"More people fleeing disappointed. Be careful what you believe on five star reviews. Current management has not improved CNS and is known for yelling at adults and children. Not what I would want."

"Carbondale New School offers small classes (max=15) and truly individualized instruction. The teachers get to know each student, how they learn and what they need. Then, they bend over backwards to provide it. My oldest child was at CNS for 6-8th grade. He made honor roll his first quarter in high school largely due to the skills he learned at CNS. My younger child has been there since 2nd grade and will stay for the next 3 and a half years. There is no better place for her to be. There were some issues with administration a few years back, but the current director and board have cleaned up those problems and brought a stability to the school that leaves no distractions from the school's purpose: providing high quality, individualized education for the students. There is also a strong sense of community and shared purpose among most of the families at the school."

"If you have a brilliant child or your child already has a strong grasp of the fundamentals, your child may do well here. Unfortunately, children attending Pre-K/K at this school do not learn fundamentals. Our child was immediately put into a reading recovery class at public school after leaving, where this child is reading quite well now. Simply was not taught correctly at CNS. Don't let the "kindness and love & logic" talk fool you. Children as young as 4-5 years old have been separated from their classmates all day, grabbed by the arm, left in the hallway crying, marched around the perimeter of the playground, and screamed at by the current director. Thanks so much to those parents who knew this was happening and said nothing! I guess it's ok if it's not your child. So much for CNS being a community. Same child? Zero issues with behavior at public school. None. No more crying now about going to school. Loves the new teacher and school. CNS is not appropriate for children with LD issues. A lot of promises were made, but at the end of the day, services were not provided as promised by all teachers."

"The one time that I raised an issue at this school, I found that it was already being addressed, professionally and forcefully, both in the classroom and out, by no fewer than four school staff-members, including the Director, who has never turned me down for a conversation. While I acknowledge the importance of what the board does, I have been around academia a long time, and I assign far more importance to what goes on inside the classroom than what happens in board meetings. The teachers I have seen in action are professional, qualified and committed. Free of the excessive class sizes and onerous testing requirements of public schools, they are able to focus attention on improving academic performance rather than just measuring it (testing is for bureaucrats: it does nothing for kids, and parents and teachers can see progress without it). The art, Spanish and physical education classes are taught by parents--by caring and capable people invested in their child's school in every sense of the word. My general impression of the students I have come to know is that many of them will be wrecking the curve for their peers in high-school and beyond. This is a good school."
