"The below review that says "It is in no way an acceptable option. Staff and parents who voice concerns are treated terribly" could not be more true. This also is true: "In 2013, a large number of families left, registering their disappointment as they did so." Although the school has an elected board, and presumably there is an opportunity to affect change, it doesn't really work out that way. The system is fundamentally flawed, and it's hard to have tough conversations. For example, 50 percent of the teachers are on the board. Would you feel comfortable speaking the truth when your fellow board member might be responsible for your child's experience? How must the director feel with so many teachers on the board? What I can promise is that at some point the board will discover these posts and will organize an outflowing of positive responses. Once again, the people who left these reviews will be made to look "disgruntled." Perhaps we are disgruntled, though. You would be too after what we have endured. Save yourself money and frustration. Look for another option."

"I was one of those parents who never complained while we were at New School, but ran into a fellow previous parent at the grocery store who told me some other parents were posting on this site. What a wonderful community resource. Parents should know the truth about New School. It is in no way an acceptable option. Staff and parents who voice concerns are treated terribly, including those who raise serious concerns for the health and safety of others. Children are punished for not sitting still or talking in class by removing them from the others and placing them in the hall alone. Who is supervising them then? The children may be upset and have access to an exit door to the outside with no one watching them. New management is well known for yelling and pointing fingers at various parents and children, yes, YELLING AT THE CHILDREN. Kids going to a variety of public schools have parents that are shocked that across the board the kids are behind in academics due to a lack of teaching fundamentals, not due to other issues. New management has expressed openly that they felt they were mislead when they took the position and would move on if they could find another job. SO SAD"

"We, like many other families, were extremely disappointed in Carbondale New School. The physical atmosphere was unacceptable with rodent infestations, broken and unsanitized toys, and art only displayed a few times a year for the spring open house and when visitors were going to be present. The emotional atmosphere was far worse. Many of the families we are still in contact with report that their children experienced ongoing bullying problems at the school, some in the classrooms, and some on the playground. Management was neither competent nor caring. Serious issues from parents including background checks for staff and volunteers, children being let out early onto unsupervised playgrounds, bullying, dispersion of scholarship funds and expectation of volunteer hours not fairly enforced, safety issues, etc. were not adequately addressed if addressed at all. Board members would discuss their concerns with other parents outside of board meetings, even reporting some of the senior teachers as bullies themselves, but were complacent in the board meetings and when it came time to make decisions themselves."

"I have to agree with the two most recent reviews. This school has changed. Please ask a lot of questions about this school if considering it, and get everything you are told in writing. Some questions to consider: 1.) Is this school accredited or recognized by the state? 2.) Do all teachers have degrees and/or are certified to teach in IL? 3.) What is the background check policy on staff and teachers? Ask to see a written policy and ask how long it has been in place. 4.) How often have teachers participated in continuing education to enhance their skills? 5.) How are scholarships awarded? Has the board awarded scholarships in the past and then rescinded them? Get any offer of scholarship in writing! 6.) Has the school ever charged additional fees that were not in the original contract? 7.) How are complaints / concerns handled? Ask to speak with someone who brought a complaint to administration or the board. 8.) Ask for references, including families that left the school prior to graduation, particularly in the last year. 9.) Ask about the school's financial status over the past 5 years. Music, art and yoga programs are good. Spanish is lacking. Playground is nice."

"Carbondale New School is a wonderful place to send your child for Pre-K. However, CNS does not adequately prepare children for transition into public school, so save your money and send your child to public school beginning with Kindergarten."
