"The vibe at this school is great. The community is wonderful. But everyone in first grade feels really overwhelmed. Timed math tests of 50 problems at the start of first grade? You can't miss any. The reward if you pass? 100 problems! Spelling tests, no excuse words and most importantly, if you child isn't learning all of the sight words by the end of kindergarten or at whatever point, their answer is for you to DRILL you child at home! Too much pressure to perform. They are "upping" their DRA (reading) levels at Kindergarten because, well, half the kids do it anyways. Never mind the other half (namely boys) who may not be developmentally ready to read. The teachers have to bribe kids in kindergarten to learn their sight words. Learn these 3 words and you get glasses, learn the next 3 and you get a ring. We aren't sure what happened to the joy of learning. By first grade, the reading homework each night is touted because it "takes the battle" out of asking your child to read. The administration and the teachers, especially ALL of the first grade teachers are absolutely unwilling to alter ANY part of their curriculum that they've been teaching for 15 years. From the parents we've spoken with, the boys and many girls at this school in K/1st grade complain their is too much sitting and not enough doing. Integrated Arts sounds awesome, but it's a music teacher training the kids to sit straight and recite Baby Beluga each day. They advertise PE everyday, but it's all 3 classes combined and the teachers with microphones on so all can hear. My daughter complains that they sit too much in PE and play tag...but you have to walk. What kind of tag involves walking? Once a week they all run the track, but both of my sensitive/bright kiddos complain even that involves a lot of pressure...you can't walk for more than 10 seconds they say! OK school for a very average student but very bright students are bored and all are pressured immensely."

"My time there prepared me for high school classes. It is pretty sheltered though, so there was definitely an adjustment to high school in that sense."
