"I enjoyed my time at Southwestern Classical, but there were a lot of very good and very bad experiences that came with that. I struggled with personal issues while I was there, but the support from the engaging learning environment and strong ties between the students in the international baccalaureate program really helped me deal with those problems and grow as a person. Unfortunately, being so isolated from other students had the effect of intensifying any interpersonal problems with students and teachers I did see. Spending six hours a day with the same twenty or so people the way I did in my final two years is very stressful as well as rewarding. My school also faced a number of challenges that stressed the students, teachers, and administration. I was at the school when Southwestern and Classical were two separate schools. The year they combined was a very trying year for everyone. After that, the struggle between teachers and administration over budget cuts negatively impacting teachers and students was something that I and my classmates often felt first hand. We had become so close to our teachers that their struggles became ours, in a way. It was difficult because we felt that the administration did not care about us or our teachers who we loved and respected. We lacked textbooks on more than one occasion, feared that our teachers would be forced to seek work elsewhere, jeopardizing our efforts to earn the I.B diploma, and felt invisible many times because even when we voiced our concerns, they were responded to with indifference. At the same time, my classmates, the teachers, and I all worked together and bonded more closely than we could have without those outside pressures. We engaged our academic endeavors with passion because we were fighting to prove that our program and that our educations were worth the money spent. We appreciated the hard work our teachers put forth to give us engaging lessons about life and our subjects more fully."
