"I am also a teacher who has been working for school districts for the past 15 years and has been involved in her child's education. Before working with school districts I was a lab instructor in College for two years and a tutor for three. Again, as a professional, you cannot tell parents--well your child doesn't do this and that--and leave it as it is the parent's fall specially knowing that Math TEKS changed this year. You have to work with the parent to find a solution. I had to contact the teacher when I got the message from the grade book that my child was failing, I had to offer possibilities and solutions and I worked with my child everyday. That's parent involvement!"

"This is a brief answer about the STAAR fun day issue. A fun day should not be done on a STAAR make up test day for obvious reasons. Fun days should be done the week after or on any time that does not interfere with any testing. This is standard procedure for all schools. I have been helping in this school and I have seen how some students do not get fair treatment. I want to point out that I said "some students" get unfair treatment."

"I am a teacher with 10+ year experience. If a child failed, the first step is to self assess, find the problem, and improve upon it. This takes a lot of diligence and hard work. For an elementary child, parental involvement is essential. If the child doesn't know the information, the consequence will, of course, be failing. To pass the child with inflated score is to deceive him/her from progressing. If it is my child, I'd rather see him fail in elementary school years than during those violence years in college and high school. SCE challenges students to perform well and emphasizes on hard work. If you are looking for a nurturing school where everyone gets an A, this is not the place."

"I am parent of a 4th grader. I received an email from the teacher today that the 4th graders are having FUN day tomorrow!!! BTW, my child said the reason why they postponed fun day was because the school didn't know if the child who missed the STAAR test would show up on the fun day that was scheduled originally. If he did, he would need a peaceful environment to do the test, having all his friends playing outside while he takes the test would be a torture for him."

"Parent involvement is very high. Teachers seem to send the same type of homework all year long. At least for the lower grades (or with some teachers) for the past years spelling homework has been cut and paste...cut and paste."
