"Just transferred to this school last year and I have never felt more unwelcome at a school where my children attended. The front office staff are so unprofessional. I will stand at that window, while I hear them talking on the phone and I can tell by the conversation that it's a personal call, while ignoring me, like I'm the intrusion, instead of the reason for them being there. Because of the pick-up and drop off system, I never get to talk with my children's teachers to make sure there are no issues. This school is really below in comparison to Prestonsburg's communication and attitudes by the teacher/principal/staff. If you need to talk to the principal, they will keep you waiting (I think hoping you'll leave). They can give away bikes and other awards, but they can't afford books for the students. How is my son supposed to study without a book? I've heard this school is lacking; I didn't realize how bad until we moved into the district. It's amazing how ignorant (meaning not knowing) and unprepared the teachers are at the school. Instead of keeping teachers in the same grades, so they'll be efficient, they are placed in another grade, where additional prep is needed."
"If you want a school that recognizes and awards attendance and sports, this school is for you. However, as shown on test scores, Betsy Layne Elementary is consistently below state average. Administration is not welcoming to parents and if your child has health needs, the teachers, nor administration do not take these conditions seriously, making constant mistakes, with little to no communication with parents. Awards are seldom given based on grades and performance, unless high attendance is achieved, which is difficult if a child has excellent grades, but has chronic illnesses. Staff speaks negatively about other staff in the presence of parents, and enjoy playing the "blame game". I have had experiences with other schools and have never had issues; however, BLES is one constant negative after another. Bullying is said to not exist; however, in my experience, a child reported bullying to 3 different teachers, with no results. The bullying resulted in a fight, with all teachers acknowledging being told. Living in this district and paying taxes to this school, I expect my children to receive an adequate education without going out of district; however, I must pick up slack."
"Because I went there and the teachers were very helpful and willing to work with you in anyway."
"I go to Betsy Layne right now and I'm in the seventh grade I think that it is awesome there are alot of teachers that are willing to help you but also let you have fun. There are a couple of teacher's I could outsmart in the school, but you got that at every school. I am proud to go here not only because of being the #1 middle school in the county and having very good test scores but because our sports are also very good."
"There are a few good teachers, but then there are some that do not know anything about what they are teaching. Discipline is quite a problem there, but they just got a new principal so hopefully things will get better. Oh, and do not even get me started on that nasty lunchroom food."
