"As a member of the 1st 4-year graduating class, I am proud to call E.R. Murrow my academic home. The teachers have always practised a hands-on approach to learning and the curriculum was very challenging. Murrow teaches students how to think critically; define their own morality and fosters a sense of community obligation. The founding Principal was compassionate and involved in his students academic and personal lives. Without him, I know of several former students who would not have made it, myself included."

"This school is excellent for self-motivators and/or artists. The music and theater program is incredible. Even if you are not in these programs you are guaranteed to enjoy the talents of the school in the plays, concerts and SING performances. I attended in the late 90's and got a lot out of the self-sufficiency of the school. There are no bells to signal the end of periods and students are free to roam the halls throughout the day. The idea of the school is to prepare students for college and eliminate hand-holding. It was a great experience for me."

"I only have one serious complaint about this great school: The Math department. There is an apparent shortage of English speaking Math teachers in the over crowded (34 students) for advanced freshman Geometry. Engrade computer system is no substitute for teaching skills, nor is it an adequate compensation for poor communication. I shared my student's frustration in being unable to understand his teacher and was informed a week before the cycle ended that he was failing. One session with a private tutor brought his test grade up to 80, demonstrating that there was a serious disconnect in the classroom. My complaints to the department chair were met with contentious debate and with indifference from the principle. The new chancellor needs to know that NYC public school students deserve teachers that can speak English with proficiency, are effective educators and are accountable for results.. This is a serious impediment to academic success fin any math related."
