"Teachers here fail to make their students feel cared for or motivated, especially when they have to pack around forty-something kids in each class. I feel like the school could be better if it was less overcrowded. About 2,500 kids go here and it really shouldn't be more than 1,800. It seems at every other corner someone is bumping into me in the hallways during passing periods, and there is little space to get around anyone in the classrooms as well. The only reason I give this school anything more than a 1 is because of its SAT and AP scores. However..these numbers are unfortunately not what they seem because a lot of kids here have the money to spend thousands and thousands of dollars on prep courses for their AP and SAT scores unlike kids a little ways down at TOHS/NPHS with lower scores. Too much credit is given to the teachers in these cases and it really is outside work unrelated to WHS that gets the test scores to this level. Like someone mentioned below, Jeng and Elite academies can be accredited but not WHS. The kids are also rude and the cross country team needs to place a limit like most schools do so that we don't have to truck 150 other kids to every meet."

"As with anything, Westlake can rate a 5 or a 1 depending on the student. It s tremendously competitive for academics. Many of the top kids are driven and attend Elite, Jeng or other SAT prep courses. If your child can handle the stress, it s clearly the best place for advancing to a top college. Westlake places perhaps twice as many kids at top-25 colleges than other schools in the Conejo Valley and their AP and SAT scores reflect the more competitive environment. Some of the teachers at Westlake are truly stellar and rare is a teacher that doesn t belong. Their AP scores are off the charts and their counselors are beyond compare. On the other hand, as someone else highlighted, it s not a good place for kids with disabilities, and that s apparently well-understood throughout the 504 support community. And if your child is truly gifted the opportunities are also limited. Westlake is not a Palo Alto, Gunn or Torrey Pines. You may wish to consider Oak Park or Oaks Christian for a truly gifted child and supplement with online college courses from Stanford, MIT, or Duke the Conejo Valley schools are not setup to handle unconventional students and non-traditional situations."

"According to the ratings, this school soars academically and on a sports-level. Being at this school and another one for my freshman year, it can indeed be a challenge, but it isn't THAT much better than most others in this area! And how does it do well socially? Are there any signals of being a family at all in this school? I don't care WHAT the ratings say, because they can't reflect on the fact that there are 2,390 students packed into an overcrowded school that I came to in the middle of the year. Newbies are socially disconnected from the non-inclusive cliques everyone has already formed since middle and even elementary schools, which basically make up 90% of the school's population. The remaining 10% are those that have fallen through the cracks or just plainly dislike going to this school. I thought coming to Westlake wouldn't be horrible, and it hasn't been, but it's getting pretty close. Teachers can be dull and so can the WHS lifestyle. I am somewhat bias because I miss my friends and old life at my old school, but I just can't believe how there's so little connection between the students here like there was at my old school just a couple towns away."

"We are out of district transfers and have had positive experiences across the board. My son is a sophomore and absolutely loves his new school and the student population. The teachers, office staff, district staff and programs are so much better at Westlake High School/ Conejo Valley. My son is in regular college prep classes, but they are challenging and the teachers are professional and organized. The campus is gorgeous! I'm so happy we were able to transfer to WHS. I simply had no idea just how much we were missing out on while at Cam High. I cannot make a single negative comment."

"Westlake High School needs to remember that children and students are more than a number. They are so concerned with getting the highest scores that if you don't fall in that top 1% either academically or in sports, you simply don't matter. Thousand Oaks High and Newbury Park High are much better choices in the Conejo Valley."
