"My daughter has been a student in the Red Hook schools since Kindergarten, and she's had an excellent experience all the way through. We could have sent her to a private school, but because she has thrived at Red Hook, we chose not to. The HS prepares students well, offering a first-rate, high-caliber curriculum that students are encouraged to take advantage of. The majority of her classmates are academically gifted and ambitious, and my daughter has benefitted from the challenging atmosphere. She'll be graduating with an International Baccalaureate diploma, and applying to top-tier colleges. Yes, an auditorium needs to be built, but in the meantime, the Red Hook band has been holding some performances at the world-class Fisher Center at Bard College. Not too shabby! If your child is talented, bright, motivated, and comes from a supportive home, she/he will do well!"
"Red Hook is known for high test scores and success of MOST students. Even students who received straight A's do not necessarily 'succeed'. I find it quite ironic that the topic of paying taxes is barely if at all taught, when a lot of people that attend Red Hook High School will most likely continue to live in Red Hook their whole life, and the taxes are ridiculous. One more complaint, BUILD THE AUDITORIUM ALREADY! One of the only schools in the area without one and arguably the one that needs it most."
"Red Hook High School is filled with great teachers who genuinely care about their students. In response to the previous post, there is a rather large art and music program. The music program is great, and it always seems to bring in awards and honors for the abilities of the students involved. In regards to bullying, there isn't a huge problem with the students. Of course, there are occasional exceptions, but compared to many other horror stories that I've heard about bullying problems in schools, Red Hook doesn't seem to have a huge issue with this. There is a zero tolerance policy at the High School (or at least the was when I was there five years ago) in regard to bullying, drugs, alcohol, etc. Any students involved in such activities are dealt with in a very serious manner. I had a great experience with this high school, I learned a lot, and I had a great time with the teachers and students!"
"A lot of parents have posted reviews having to do with sports, but I would like to know more about the school culture, whether/how the arts are valued/incorporated into the curriculum, if there is a lot of teaching to the test/pressure related to test scores, and how the kids treat each other/if there is bullying and if so how it is dealt with by the adminstrators and teachers. Thanks for any info you can provide!"
"I had to post a statement, after reading the statements that have been posted about Red Hook's Athletics program. As far as only making a team if your part of the 'political crowd', that's absolutely ridiculous! My son has had no problem making it on Red Hook's athletic teams, and I'm definately not part of any 'political crowd', or 'click' in Red Hook. None of his older siblings played on any teams for Red Hook either! He made the team based on his ability, and nothing else. Re: your child having to be an exceptional player to make a team in Red Hook: Uh, Hello...That's the way it's supposed to be! This isn't town Little League, or CYO Basketball, where everyone pays, and everyone plays. Any student that wants it bad enough, and practices on their own everyday to improve their game, can make a team in Red Hook!"
