"Comparatively, Volunteer isn't too bad for the area. Dobyns-Bennett outclasses it greatly, of course, but DB is a pretty big measuring stick for anybody. Of the two schools (not counting Clinch for the obvious reason of class size), Volunteer is heavier on the academics than Cherokee. It doesn't help that much when most of the students don't care, the teachers are told to pass students just to keep up the graduate part of the county's "Educate and Graduate" motto, and the classes claiming to be honors have to teach to kids who aren't honors students. The AP classes are generally good, the arts classes are good, the language department tries but when you only have Honors French and no general.... The counselors, well... One of them honestly just doesn't care and I was unfortunate enough to be stuck with them. On the other hand, the NJROTC department is absolutely outstanding and the best thing about the school. It's one of the few things that redeems the school to just "bad." On the whole, a kid who is willing to put in the effort can do surprisingly well at Volunteer. However, any kid who needs a bit of a boost or inspiration from a teacher to work is going to have issues unless they stumble across one of the faculty gems."

"I would definitely choose this school if I had it to do over again. I love it!"

"The students are very disrespectful at Volunteer High School, some students use profane language towards their teachers although very little is done about it. The dress code is violated throughout the year, but very few teachers care to enforce it. Students use tobacco products in the bathrooms and some during class, usually chewing tobacco during class. Some of the classes I have been enrolled in are barely classes at all. Teachers are not teaching, but instead, are letting the students act like animals and do as they wish when they are supposed to be learning."

"The experience isn't bad compared to this area, but when compared to schools around the state or country the experience is much worse."

"The teachers do what they have to. Most do help in the classroom setting and make sure the students understand the lessons. They try to use technology when available, but there is not always adequate availability for students from low income families or who live outside the grid."
