"The parents are very down to earth. The school attracts people who care about their children and not about status or elitism and this is wonderful. Some of the teachers are intelligent and game to explore their topics in a variety of ways to reach their children. For a student who is a good student this great. But there are many kids in grade school and high school who are highly intelligent but don't understand how to work. They need some guidancestructures to help guide them. Even in a less traditional school, structure is valuable. A teacher with an understanding of their subject and of young minds can be a wonderful asset in this type of school. I have found some of the teachers are themselves young kids, immature and unable to lead impressionable minds well, there are also people there who it seems would really be better off teaching college students. There is a missing piece to the puzzle at this school, and that piece has to do with putting the kids first :before the publicity and marketing l and before progressive ideology."

"Saddened by their strict adherence to their ideology over the true needs of their students. Very disheartened by the promoting of identity politics and limited discussions of race that seem disingenuous in a basically all white school. Always felt this reflected the needs of the faculty and admin, ( to be approved of and seem current/cool among other NYC schools and The New York Times), as well as the needs of some of the "star" parents (who get good press if they are involved in a "topical subject" in their schools.) Never felt whole student body or their families were part of a REAL discussion at all re this topic-- and that is to the detriment of all concerned. Marketing is a big priority here."

"Some of the academic teachers run wonderful classrooms and are engaging and helpful. And some of the people in admin try very hard. Still, it is not a school where parents are welcome to participate. If we interfere, either by hiring an outside tutor, or trying to be involved in our child's education, one gets the sense from the school that we are just the "dead weight" of the past that are holding our children back from a more "progressive future." Asking questions about testing and real world concerns also elicits an air of skepticism. It is a very ideological place and unfortunately because of this rigid. The school doesn't deal with students who don't fit, who don't work well individually, who don't have an exceptional artistic talent, or who do need more support. In retrospect, I feel my child may have been better served by public school. Public have the resources and understanding to deal with learning disabilities. This school is not cut out for that. I wish, in retrospect, someone there could have simply admitted this to our family. Instead we received a lot of blank stares and probably kept our child in the school for too long."

"Students truly do develop a love of learning at Calhoun. Teachers engage students in the classroom and continually encourage them to be individual thinkers. Students develop a respect and compassion for their community and the world."
