"We recently shadowed at CA. Though our child was in high-spirits at arrival, his first experience was being physically pushed aside by a teacher, as she exited the office. This was immediately followed by being handed a squeeze ball based on an assumption he was 'nervous.' This confused him and set a tone for the rest of the day. To us, this seemed like a very template approach, pushing aside a few minutes of courtesy to greet and get-to-know the child before drawing conclusions. As for the curriculum, the focus is on reading and math with no access to the science lab for hands-on, deep experiences until 5th grade. The few teachers we met lacked smiles, spark and enthusiasm. The physical classroom space was cramped and busy. And the icing, our child was targeted by two boys and made to feel uncomfortable. In his words at pick-up, 'I don't want to go back to a school with bullies.' CA's top-down approach assumes there is something to be 'fixed' in a dyslexic child. Beyond the research and more current interventions that actually frame dyslexia as a right-brained, creative gift. We're in need of a school, not a repair shop. No Thanks!"

"My husband and I visited Charles Armstrong in March of 2013 for our then 4th grader with dyslexia. After over an hour in traffic we arrived to find out that there is a 2+ year waiting list. I was also shocked to learn that tutoring after school is the norm, though I was assured that there are tutors that come to campus after school on your dime - oh good! There is also homework assigned. When you take into consideration the tuition that they charge, the time commuting to and from school, the time with a tutor after school, paying the tutor, and doing home work once home, we said, NO THANK YOU!"

"This school is amazing. This is my son's third year at the school. He entered 2nd grade not reading at all and now he is reading above grade level. More importantly the teachers and administration are incredibly thoughtful and caring and really get to know each child. It is an amazing place for LD kids!"

"My child loved CAS. Made such a big difference for her. Teachers are great and the new Middle School Head is doing a nice job. The best school in the bay area of students that learn differently. My child is graduating from HS with 3.7 GPA and heading to UCL in the fall all because of this school and it teachers. I stay involved!"

"I'm giving this school 1 star is which denotes an unsatisfactory rating. Two stars signifies below average which I considered because I think some people at the school work very hard and try to make it a great place. However when you place this school next to other schools in this category which it is positions itself with, it falls extremely short. Having a child with LD is really tough and I regret to inform you that if you have high aspirations for your child to succeed, this school alone is not enough. I found that the families that were successful here were also getting outside support. This school is unsatisfactory because it is misleading to parents, hires unqualified teachers, position itself as a type of 'best in its class" institution and it is not."
