"While CLC has a vibrant parent community and a strong field trip program, it misses the boat on academics. An experimental school, CLC does not rely on tried and true educational methods. Math, in particular, suffers and when students leave here, they often have significant gaps in foundational math. Fundamental phonics and grammar rules are also not taught. It is very difficult to tell how your child is faring academically as most students only receive a "developmental" report card. No letter grades are provided and some of the symbols can either mean that your child has not mastered a concept or that the concept has not been taught yet. Further, CLC prides itself on being a school without teacher tenure. While educators can technically be let go, it almost never happens. Several ineffective educators continue to teach, year after year, with families scrambling not to be placed in those classrooms. CLC also promotes from within, which means that many staff are not qualified for positions in which they are placed. Finally, last year saw a rash of highly involved families leave CLC. Ask why."

"Great school for independent learners. Requires students to take initiatives so not ideal for children who cannot advocate for their learning goals."

"As a teacher I feel I have a great deal of insight into what makes this school special. First, SCCLC is K-8 allowing the teachers and staff to form very close relationships with the students and for the students to have very close relationships with each other. Second, SCCLC has multi-age classrooms meaning students have a teacher for 2 years. This is valuable because it takes time to get to know a student and for a student to feel comfortable with a teacher. Normally everyone has to start over every year but at SCCLC everyone can hit the ground running the second year. Third, the teachers at SCCLC do not have a teachers union and are all at the school because of their outstanding teaching abilities. Teachers can and have been let go. Fourth, the curriculum is project based and the children never do worksheets. They are learning in dynamic and interesting ways. Finally, SCCLC kids leave the school feeling confident and prepared after 9 years in a loving environment surrounded by dedicated educators."

"San Carlos Charter Learning Center is an amazing school with the most incredible and dedicated teachers you can find. They believe in progressive education and place an emphasis on the whole child. They educate the children largely through project based, hands on learning and provide a depth of understanding in all subjects. I have two children with very different personalities and learning styles and both have thrived. SCCLC is providing my kids with the education I wish I had received. As a parent I am thrilled to be able to participate in my child's education in direct and meaningful ways. My children have learned how to be critical thinkers, good world citizens and advocate for themselves. I couldn't be happier"

"Parents should know that this school does not believe in traditional teaching methods; methods which have worked for hundreds of years. They don't believe in teaching the times tables; they don't believe in phonics, basically they don't believe any any process that makes a child memorize their work - they believe that rote memorization is somehow harmful to a child's spirit, which is absurd. They also do not give letter grades. When you get your child's report card you will have to read through 8 pages of subjective nonsense, but you still will have no clue as to how your child is doing in school. I was told my child was doing great - until I later found out she was two years behind in at least two subjects. A letter grade may have avoided this. The staff is nice and seem to care, but they are just on another planet when it comes to their views on how best to teach children. This school is an ongoing experiment - and the results are not in yet, and their is no data or longitudinal research to prove their experimental teaching methods are successful. Why take such a risk with something as important as your child's education when their are better schools in the neighborhood."
