"The new HI-CAP program at Enterprise takes 5th graders' MAP scores & alters the criteria to allow 5 times the number of students to enter the program as 6th graders. The new criteria is broad, unspecific, & often is the result of parents complaining enough to the councilors to get their kids in. The result is 25% of the 6th grade class now being deemed as "gifted" while the actual percentage of students who meet the original criteria is 5%. This not only means that the truly gifted students (whom the program was designed to help) are forced to dumb-down their curriculum, but that other, highly intelligent students whose parents did not ensure them a spot in the hi-cap classes are told they are not as good as their long-time peers. Most of these kids have gone to school together for years & know where they stand intellectually in comparison to their peers. It not only sends a striking message of inferiority to your child, but creates an environment of hostility that fosters resentment, low self esteem & ensures displaced social groups. Meanwhile, non-hi-cap students receive LESS than the bare minimum & sit through class everyday unchallenged, bored, resentful & depressed."

"The branding of students as "Hi Cap" or "not so smart" starts on day one. It is a horrible thing to do to pre-teens who are already feeling awkward. While the favored students get the best teachers and extensive special activities, the 75% of students not blessed get a mediocre education. The self esteem and motivation of students suddenly deemed unworthy drops rapidly. It is especially distressing to learn that of the many students with test scores that put them in contention for the Hi Cap program, pushy parents seem to be the main criterion for the final selection. Favored students are discouraged from interacting with non-Hi-Cap students. Children of similar intellect who have been friends for years are suddenly in different worlds. The ridicule and jokes made at the expense of the the "dumb" kids is appalling. I would strongly encourage any parent considering sending their child to Enterprise to go elsewhere. Both Carmichael and Chief Jo treat the average and better than average students much better than Enterprise. Home schooling would be a better option than allowing your student's morale, self esteem and motivation to be destroyed by the Enterprise experience."

"My kids enjoyed their years at EMS. I particularly liked the team approach, where the counselors assigned kids to a team of teachers for sixth grade; I think it helped with the transition to middle school. The school has a very strong music program, and a variety of other clubs and teams for kids to join, like yearbook club, archery club, math club, and art club. It also has a fantastic library (be sure to ask the librarian about Cavalcade of Authors, an amazing event that kids can apply to attend each year). We are glad that our kids got to attend this school!"

"Sixth grade students are assigned to "teams" on day one. The Hi Cap students get the best teachers and all the prestige. Anyone not on the Investigator Hi Cap team is out of luck. My daughter came home from her second day very dejected. She told me she was stupid because she was on a dumb team. The Hi Caps rub their status in the other kids faces. This is no way to run a school, marking kids as stupid on their second day of class. The counselor refused to discuss the issue and got very defensive. We are hoping to get our kids it of this very poorly run school."

"My 8th grade Hi-Cap student has had very good teachers who are communicative through e-mail. I think most classmates are like her in getting work done during class time with not too much homework. I suspect the amount of homework required in high school may come as a shock, though. The school has a nice, rural, feel with a nice, new building. Nice Counselors. My child has had a great experience in Choir and Drama. There is a large group of kids who are academically gifted and the school tries hard to keep these kids motivated and challenged. This school has piloted the HiCap programs adopted by the other mid. schools. The percentage of students inducted into the NJ Honor Society was quite impressive. The school is also effective in keeping the kids in each grade away from possible negative influences of older kids as each grade has their own hall."
