"While students are tracked, if you are tracked into the "college-bound" category, you will become very well prepared for college. There's heavy pressure to take several Advanced Placement classes, but this will help you once you get to college because you will be ready for the heavy workload of college classes and you may even have enough credit to graduate college a year early. However, the process of taking these Advanced Placement classes is very tiresome, and students are very competitive. You cannot go five minutes without hearing people brag about test scores and some people may try to sabotage other people's grades. It can also be difficult to get A's in classes. I was able to score 5's on all of my AP exams, so I was well-prepared, but I did not receive A's for each of those classes, which I do not think is very fair. Additionally, because the advanced classes are very rigorous, if one makes the valid decision to forego an AP class for the CP or "college prep" version of the class, they will be treated like they are dumb. The CP versions of the classes do not teach students or do a good job of preparing students for anything other than graduation. This makes the tracking of students by race/SES very problematic, as students are either in an incredibly challenging and competitive class, or a class that cares little about the student's understanding of the subject being taught."

"The teachers are alright. Honestly, they do tend to favor the outgoing, well-liked, "popular" students on campus, which is kind of expected, but if you are shy they probably will not give you much notice unless you make an incredible effort to make your presence in their class known. A couple of my teachers didn't even learn my name until halfway through the year because I was very quiet in class. I know if I wanted my teachers to care about me more I should have put more of an effort, but I always felt like they wanted to make friends with all the popular students and cared less for the quieter students."

"Teachers at San Mateo High School are the best! They honestly do care for all their students and help them succeed in High School. When ever you need help or have a problem you can always go up to one of them ask them for help. All they want to see is their students graduate high school and go out and change the world!"

"To be honest, this school is very divided. Students are tracked from before they get there, and even though they are trying to make it an "equal opportunity" school, many students of color are put into the remedial classes while the students from higher-income neighborhoods are tracked into the advanced classes. This divides the students by both socioeconomic status and race/ethnicity. Among the "college bound" students, there is a lot of competition about grades and scores, creating a very stressful environment. The students involved in leadership and/or theatre (in other words the very outspoken students who are most likely white or Asian) are the most students who are most respected and heard by the teachers. Everyone else just kind of exists and tries to survive the four long years they spend here."

"This school is unique because out of our whole district we're the most spirited! You always see us wearing our school colors every Friday and lunch Rallies out in the Quad. We're also very diverse, we meet new people everyday, and we don't have any clicks like most schools do."
