"I do prefer this school over others (as the review below states) but I have a lot of complaints. The amount of busywork (working just as a time filler) is absurd! As a 7th grade student I did not find myself getting many opportunities (in school time) to express my creativity. There are clubs such as the thespians and jaguar art explorers that I enjoy, but it is difficult for a lot of students to find time to go to groups outside of the school day especially with homework. I support homework that is educational and helpful, but a lot of it just seems like work for works sake. Some teachers are great like the 7th grade algebra teacher and civics teacher. On the other side, the language arts and science teachers were uninvolved and unpleasant. I have no problem with hard classes and believe that you need to push yourself if you want to grow, that's not the problem. (I am an honors student with all A's and B's). The school lunches are horrible. I don't touch anything that isn't pre-packaged since I found something in my fish finger. I pack my own lunch when I can. The guidence counselors are not the kind of people any student would feel comfortable talking to. Unfortunate."

"Marshall isn't one of those schools that's is friendly. It's much of life in prison rather than a school. Teachers and staffs are strict and rude. Learning is very poor, lots of fights, hard to get friends, and the principal is giving out new lessons to teachers, which confuses their students how to learn.I WOULDN'T recommend anyone to go to this school."

"The teachers at the school have an ability to teach and disipline behavior which lots of schools can't do."

"I am the parent of a 7th grade student in the gifted magnet. This is NOT a "gifted" program, it's more of an "honors" program. Students are given very little freedom to develop their "giftedness" or hone their unique capabilities. Teachers teach "obedience" under the guise of "responsibility." This may be due to the fact that the "gifted" program is forced to adhere to the "fundamental" rules, which is absurd. Gifted education is the exact opposite of a fundamental-back-to-basics approach. For example, I teach literature at both the high-school and college level. My son LOVES reading and exploring texts. He loves discussing texts, how language is used to create texts, etc. He has never received anything higher than a D in his Language Arts classes. The "fundamental" limitations and mandates are destroying his "gifted" experience. I have talked with many parents who feel the same. If Marshall Middle wants an Honors Program, they should get one, what they shouldn't do is corrupt a Gifted Education and destroy the confidence of its students."
