"Academically, there are many very accomplished and passionate teachers that love teaching and are good at it. For many classes, especially the sciences, even our non-honors classes cover more material than other schools' honors classes. However, there is not a lot of flexibility in taking classes that you want to take before senior year. All of the science classes require a full course of study in the subject before you take AP, even when the AP class is mostly review and does not necessarily require the knowledge of the years prior. This lack of underclass AP options extends itself into the humanities as well, and because of it seniors often feel pressured to take as many AP courses as possible, knowing that their "competitors" at other schools in the area have had three years to build up their AP resume. In addition, while the quality of the teachers is generally very high, several teachers are notoriously bad at teaching. All in all, though, you will get a good education here."

"Its a really great school. Lots of freedom, lots of amazing classes and the teachers really do care and teach you a lot. Teachers really want you to succeed. The diversity isn't AMAZING but you click and bond when you find the people like you. They have SO many support systems from college and career counseling (a place where i was at almost everyday.) to classes where they fit EXACTLY your level needs. The campus is actually really nice and has a lot of seating for each grade (the l-bench, senior commons, etc). But, the only thing is because the school academics are so amazing, there is A LOT of homework and A LOT of testing. Of course being a highschool, you can't really say "but i have a math test this day" because the classes don't coordinate that easily. Faculty is nice and you feel safe talking to them. But overall, you will learn a lot and you really enter college with more school experience than most high schools."

"Overall, I am grateful for attending Newton South. The teachers and faculty care about your success and do prepare you well for furthering your education. The academic workload is rigorous and a sense of competition is present at South. If you take advantage of the resources and make your High School experience what you want it to be, then South won't be a stressful time. The food is not the best, but it does not need to be."

"Newton South High School is home to a competitive environment, where the majority of its students strive to be well-rounded and successful. While, many students aim to take the highest levels of courses possible because it "sounds good," it's important to take a step back and truly enjoy the courses that are being offered-- that's what I'd like to see change."
