"Signal Mountain has the potential to be a great school, perhaps even amazing school. We have the experienced teachers, we have the resources, we have the facilities, and we have rigorous classes. What we also have is an incredibly antagonistic, nonsensical, controlling, and limiting (the word totalitarian comes to mind) administration. The reason this school is not as good ad it could be is because the administration often times actively discourages and limits access to the great resources and facilities it has to offer. Excessive workload in many mid to higher level classes is also an issue. This, along with an astoundingly lazy and errant attitude that permeates a majority of the student culture has created a hostile and repressive environment that keeps SMMHS from reaching its true potential."

"You take the good with the bad with SMMHS. The parents are involved, but at times can be overbearing to the point of hindering the professionals (teachers, administrators, coaches) from doing the jobs for which they are better trained. The IB program is challenging, but if one prefers AP classes there are none really offered past a student's sophomore year. Some consider the IB program to be more divisive and separating than the former AP system employed there, but there is the opportunity to go a partial IB route. There is very little racial diversity, to the point of many of the private schools being more racially diverse. The Mountain Education Foundation supplements state and county funding and helps keep the school well stocked with top end calculators, lab supplies, etc. The students test well when compared to other public schools in the state. Some of that is due to the curriculum and preparation, but much of that can be attributed to simple demographics."

"Signal Mountain High School has some of the best teachers who prepare for students for college well. The IB program offers students the unique opportunity to be more globally minded and earn college credits. There is a high expectation for students to be academically successful that can be stressful, but overall beneficial."

"Signal Mountain Middle/High School is not just an average high school. Combining all of the high level courses that they offer with the excellent teaching, I couldn't imagine that there is a public high school that could prepare me more for my future."
