Logs: 

The 12" and 18" diameter logs envelop you with a sense of structure and mass that impart a feeling of permanence. The logs were harvested from dead standing Lodgepole Pine trees in Montana and Idaho. They were shipped to Victor, Montana where they dried for 3 years and were then hand crafted and assembled over 6 months into this custom home. They were then disassembled and transported to Colorado where they were reassembled and finished over 18 months into PeakHaven. The home was completed in early 2002.

Materials: 

Stone for the massive fireplaces and the kitchen floor was quarried throughout the West in Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, and Arizona. The boulders accenting the property were hand picked in Alma, Colorado for their unique color and streaks of rodochrosite, a mineral used in making fine jewelry. 

Floors in the great room, library, and family room were reclaimed from mills and barns in the East where they were part of buildings erected 200 years ago.

The cabinetry, doors, and trim throughout the house were crafted from butternut wood, a wood source used in fine woodworking by cabinetmakers for well over a century.

Windows were made with Low-E energy-efficient insulating glass that blocks harmful UV rays and reduces solar gain, but lets the sun shine in.

Views: 

The views are unsurpassed anywhere in the west. The open ranch land, heavily forested slopes, and 14,000' snowcapped mountains surrounding the valley create an artist's palette of colors, textures, and topography. 4,000 square feet of redwood deck and blue stone patios take maximum advantage of these magnificent views 360 degrees around the house.

The Valley 

Area: 

Chaffee County, population approximately 25,000, is a ranching/tourist/retirement community nestled in the Arkansas River valley. Flanked on the West by seven 14,000' mountains (the highest concentration of 14ers in the U.S.), and on the east by the Arkansas River, the valley has successfully resisted over-development and has retained its vast open spaces, historic character, and simplicity (87% of the land is protected public state and federal land). While it is a lifetime away from the population density and social conventions of neighboring Eagle and Summit county ski areas, it is just a scenic 1 + hour drive to take advantage of their amenities before retreating back to the solitude, serenity, and exceptionally mild climate of this paradise on the leeward side of the continental divide.

Recreation: 

The opportunities for recreation are virtually limitless. In the summer, fish in the Arkansas River or in the other gold medal waters in neighboring counties; hike the vast expanses of the national forests and wilderness areas throughout the mountains; ride ATVs, horses, or mountain bikes on the almost 300 miles of trails in the county; golf the 2 municipal courses (or the numerous courses in Eagle and Summit counties), or road bike throughout the county and the rockies. 

In the winter, the snow line is 2,000 feet above the valley floor so that snowshoeing and cross country skiing are close at hand; 150+ miles of groomed trails throughout the mountains make this a haven for snowmobiling; and world-class skiing at numerous major ski areas is a short 40 minutes to 1 1/2 hours away. Because the climate is so mild, almost all of the summer recreation activities are also available throughout the winter. 

Climate: 

Buena Vista, the "banana belt" of Colorado is nestled in the Arkansas River Valley, protected on the West by seven 14,000' mountains. The weather climbs up the backside of these huge mountains and pops across the valley dropping very little of its moisture. As a result, the valley boasts 310 days of sunshine a year, only 40 inches of snow in the winter (which melts quickly in the intense sun), and average maximum temperatures of a dry 41 degrees in January and 82 degrees in July. So, in the winter, you can ski, snowshoe or snowmobile in the morning, and then play golf, ride horses, or go fishing in the afternoon.

Great Room

This room has been designed and furnished to celebrate a Colorado lodge at the turn of the 20th century with massive logs towering 35 feet to the ceiling, a huge granite fireplace, reclaimed 200 year old Antique Heart Pine floors, indoor waterfalls, wall hanging animal mounts, an 18 foot totem pole, and a wall of windows overlooking the 14,000' mountains across the front yard.

FLOOR: The 10 wide Premium Grade Antique Southern Heart Pine floor planks have been sawn from reclaimed Heart Pine timbers. This rare antique flooring has been recovered from old factory floors and textile mill posts and beams in New England and along the East Coast, where, because of its strength and durability, it was used to rebuild the North during the Industrial Revolution 200 years ago. 

There is living history in each plank, and it is truly the wood that built America. This beautiful historic Antique Heart Pine flooring is characterized by a tight, vertical grain structure and deep orange patina. It is accented with authentic nail holes and markings from an earlier time, as well as knots, and some checking. This character coupled with color variation ranging from the light blonde of the sap wood to darker red heart wood, enhances the floor's warmth and tells a story about the history of the floor.

FIREPLACE: Crafted from Black Mountain Granite in northern Idaho, this one of a kind fireplace is the perfect centerpiece for family and social gatherings. At 6 1/2 feet wide, 5 1/2 feet high, and 2 3/4 feet deep, it accommodates 3+ foot logs to fuel fires to fit the size of the room. A fresh air intake is built into the front of the hearth to fuel the fire with fresh outside air thus minimizing loss of heated air from inside the room.

MANTLE: The 17 foot mantle has been crafted from a huge, 18 inch Western Juniper harvested from central Oregon and coped to fit the granite stones facing the fireplace.

PONDS & WATERFALLS: Five waterfalls cascading into two ponds at either side of the entryway, add a real mountain sound and experience to the entire home. (The waterfalls can be turned on and off, and modulated in terms of flow and sound). The waterfalls and ponds are crafted from the same Idaho Black Granite used in the fireplace.

ANIMAL MOUNTS: The walls are adorned with mounts of animals indigenous to the property including elk, mule deer, foxes, pronghorn and mountain lion.

TOTEM POLE: An 18 foot totem pole crafted from Engelmann Spruce in Montana commemorates the Pacific Northwest Indian tradition of carving huge sculptures recounting familiar legends, clan lineages, and notable events.

WINDOWS: The entire west wall of the great room is composed of windows looking out to five 14,000' snow capped mountains literally across the front pasture.

Family Room/Dining Room

This room has been designed and furnished to replicate a Colorado trappers cabin circa 1810, from the cozy log walls, to the massive walk-in fireplace, the rustic, reclaimed barn siding floors, and the panoramic dining room.

FLOOR: 7 and 10 wide Barn Siding planks were reclaimed from historic barns in New England, and then milled to bring out each plank s rich patina giving the floor a rugged, antique look with a sense of history and character.

FIREPLACE: The room s centerpiece is a massive walk-in fireplace measuring 8 feet wide, 5 1/2 feet high, and 3 1/2 feet deep. The fireplace is crafted from Arkansas Valley Moss Rock which contributes a primitive feel to the room. Large cooking pots hang inside the fireplace as they did 200 years ago as if the venison stew were still simmering.

HOME THEATRE: The sitting area in front of the fireplace has butternut cabinetry which houses a full home theatre with a wide screen tv, amplifiers that drive sound throughout the entire house, DVD, VCR, CD players, and 6 surround sound speakers that bring the screen action into the room.

Dining Room

The dining room is an octagon of logs and picture windows looking out over the 14,000' mountains in front of the house. The dining table is a 7 foot round beveled glass top mounted on a sculptured, 1000 year old Bristle Cone Pine tree trunk collected in Colorado.

Gourmet Kitchen/Breakfast Room
