Everything was the most modern & cutting edge design for the time. From the stained-glass windows, intricately carved staircases & high ceilings, to the elaborate metalwork, the unique central vacuum cleaning system, to elevator, the fire extinguishing & housekeepers' notification systems, this was indeed a regal a wedding gift. Here, at the Mansion, the Brookes oversaw their iron works, steel foundry, manufacturing, machine shops, utilities, banking, land & railroad dynasty that was centered in Birdsboro & Reading. It's considered the largest personal residence built in the region. 6,000 acres of their land holdings was sold in 1930's to create what's today Hopewell Village National Historic Site & French Creek State Park. In a separate 2-story building over 24 of the finest carriages were polished & ready at a moments notice, including Edward's favorite, one showcased at the Chicago World's Fair.
